NYS Highway & Public Works Expo 2026

The NYS Highway & Public Works Expo is a one-day show for the people who keep New York's roads open: town, village, city and county highway superintendents, public works commissioners, NYSDOT and Thruway Authority staff, their crews, and the contractors who work for them.

It fills the Exposition Center at the New York State Fairgrounds in Syracuse on the last Wednesday of October, and every highway and public works department in the state is sent free tickets.

The show belongs to Superintendent's Profile, the monthly magazine that reaches every elected and appointed highway superintendent in New York, which is why the crowd is almost entirely municipal. Attendance set records in 2023 with 1,400 visitors and again in 2025 with more than 1,500, when exhibits also spilled out into the parking lot. Timing is a large part of the appeal for sellers: late October is when towns and counties write next year's equipment budgets.

How it compares

  1. Hard Hat ExpoSyracuse, 5,000
  2. PWXHouston, 4,979
  3. This show: NYS Highway & Public Works ExpoSyracuse

Hard Hat Expo uses the same fairgrounds in March, runs for two days and draws a broader construction crowd: highway and heavy contractors, excavation and utility firms, landscapers, paving companies and aggregate producers alongside municipal superintendents. With more than 135 exhibitors, it is the better stop for a dealer who sells loaders and compact equipment to contractors and towns alike.

A supplier whose customers are mostly highway departments gets a denser room in October. Nearly everyone walking the Exposition Center floor runs or works in a municipal department, and many of them are small-town superintendents who choose the plow, the truck body or the mower themselves.

PWX, the American Public Works Association's national show, moves to a different US city each year and pairs its exhibit hall with an education program for public works directors and engineers. It suits manufacturers working national accounts and buyers who want to compare suppliers from across the country. The Syracuse expo trades that breadth for one concentrated day with New York buyers only.

For a New York dealer the two Syracuse shows work as a pair: March reaches contractors before the construction season, and October reaches municipalities while budgets are being set.

The right trip for dealers, upfitters and manufacturers who sell trucks, equipment, snow and ice products or road supplies to New York municipalities and want a day in front of the superintendents who write the purchase orders.

Who exhibits

Most exhibitors are New York dealers and upfitters who already sell to highway departments. Truck dealers such as Allegiance Trucks, Hunter Trucks and Conway Beam Truck Group bring vehicles indoors, and equipment dealers including Milton CAT, Tracey Road Equipment and Stephenson Equipment show loaders, mowers and paving gear. Snow and ice suppliers are well represented, from Viking Cives and Henderson Products to Winter Equipment Company. Auction services such as GovDeals and Auctions International come for departments selling surplus fleet.

NYS Highway & Public Works Expo 2026

This is the 32nd NYS Highway & Public Works Expo, following a record 2025 when the crowd passed 1,500 and displays spilled out of the Exposition Center into the parking lot. Technology suppliers joining this year include Speed Of Light Optics with mobile LiDAR road mapping and Precision Infrastructure Management with sidewalk restoration and ADA transition plans, alongside the usual truck dealers, equipment dealers and snow and ice suppliers.

  • Superintendents can bring their crews: the free tickets go to whole departments, and operators and mechanics often get more out of a close look at a plow hitch or a lift than a brochure.
  • The floor is busiest in the first hours, when the large truck and equipment displays draw crowds; booths with small tabletop displays are easier to talk at after lunch, which is served free to attendees.
  • Registration includes a raffle entry. Door prizes are drawn throughout the day, and grand prizes have included Buffalo Bills and Watkins Glen NASCAR tickets, so stay on the floor until the final drawings.

Exhibiting

Booths are booked online through an exhibitor account, and the floor takes everything from tabletop displays to trucks and machines shown inside the hall. Exhibitors carry their own liability insurance naming Profile Publications for the set-up, show and tear-down days. The show pays off best for dealers who can put a working unit in front of a superintendent just before budgets are set, and for suppliers who also buy from fellow exhibitors.
