Food manufacturers, importers and wholesalers exhibit alongside refrigeration, shelving, packaging and checkout suppliers. For an independent grocer, that means a conversation about the next snack or frozen-food line can sit beside one about the equipment needed to sell it.

The Vancouver show was established in 1997 to connect retailers and manufacturers in the western grocery sector. CFIG, the Canadian Federation of Independent Grocers, organizes it. More than 2,800 grocery stakeholders and over 210 exhibitors took part in 2025, when total attendance rose 21% from the previous year. Retailers represented included Pattison Food Group, Save on Foods, Stong’s Market, Loblaw and Sobeys. Its western base gives the show a clear regional center of gravity, while the retail relationships extend across Canada.

How it compares

  1. SIAL CanadaToronto, 21K
  2. This show: Grocery & Specialty Food West Trade Show & Conference2,600
  3. Grocery Innovations CanadaToronto

Grocery Innovations Canada is the closest alternative. CFIG’s Toronto show puts grocery products, store operations and retail technology in front of owners, category managers and buyers in the fall. It makes sense for suppliers whose next conversations are with eastern Canadian retailers or national buying teams. GSF West gives the same broad grocery brief a western setting, with BC producers and regional distribution alongside national brands.

SIAL Canada serves a wider food business audience. Its 2026 Montreal show brought together more than 850 exhibitors and 26,000 professionals, with visitors from more than 90 countries. International sourcing, export distribution and food innovation make it a different trip from the more concentrated retail conversations at GSF West. SIAL rotates between Toronto and Montreal; GSF provides continuity in Vancouver.

The choice depends on the business being developed. A food exporter seeking buyers from several markets has a broader field at SIAL. A store owner comparing both grocery lines and refrigeration or merchandising suppliers has a more direct fit at GSF West. For a brand building western Canadian listings, the combination of local producers, wholesale channels and established grocery suppliers is the central reason to be here.

GSF West suits grocers and suppliers who need western Canadian retail relationships, with food buying and store operations in the same conversation.

Who exhibits

The supplier mix covers the whole grocery store. Burnbrae Farms, Maple Leaf Foods and Lactalis Canada bring familiar food lines, while Bosa Foods and Level Ground Coffee Roasters add specialty products. Associated Grocers, UNFI Canada and Sobeys Wholesale represent routes to market. Arneg Canada, Hussmann Canada and Ishida Canada connect the assortment discussion to refrigeration, equipment and weighing. This is a grocery retail floor with both products to stock and systems to run the store.

Grocery & Specialty Food West Trade Show & Conference 2027

For 2027, Category Connect replaces Retailer Connect with prescheduled individual meetings between exhibitors and grocery retailers. Suppliers represent a category with exclusivity, giving the program a sharper structure than an open networking session. The floor brings together Buy BC and Ontario pavilions, first-time exhibitors, Sustainability Sentral and Small Business Exchange. The New Product Showcase adds an entrance display for new grocery lines, with participants also entered into Top 10 in Grocery.

  • Use the New Product Showcase in the entrance hallway to compare launches before finding the brands on the grocery floor.
  • Treat Category Connect as a separate retailer-supplier program: suppliers must be GSF exhibitors representing a category, and participation requires advance registration.
  • For provincial sourcing, compare Buy BC with the Ontario pavilion; both sit alongside the wider grocery supplier mix.

Exhibiting

Space applications distinguish CFIG member and non-member rates, booth size bands, corners and Grocery Avenue frontage. The package includes draped walls, material handling and exhibitor badges, while booth flooring is mandatory. Suppliers entering western grocery retail can add the New Product Showcase or apply to represent a category in Category Connect.
